PROCALCITONIN

Procalcitonin test helps to diagnose sepsis in your body. Severe bacterial infection can spread into the blood stream causing septicemia & septic shock. This can happen in both adults & neonates. Procalcitonin levels are high in bacterial infections but remain low in viral infections. This test is also used to monitor recovery from severe bacterial infections. Other conditions which show high procalcitonin levels due to secondary infection are after surgery, in severe trauma, burns & multiorgan failure.
