Overview
What is INSULIN, FASTING
Your body’s pancreas produces the hormone insulin. It facilitates the body’s energy conversion from food. Following a meal, insulin causes blood glucose to enter cells where it is converted into sugar, protein, and fat. Insulin facilitates the usage of stored fat, protein, and sugar when we require extra energy. Diabetes is a disorder where the body either produces insufficient amounts of insulin for everyday needs or uses the insulin that is produced improperly. Because the pancreatic cells that produce insulin are damaged, type 1 diabetes results from an insulin shortage. The body’s resistance to insulin’s effects is the cause of type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this test is to manage diabetes. Insulinoma, a tumor that secretes insulin, can also be diagnosed with it. For this test, a minimum of eight hours of fasting is advised. It aids in the detection of insulin resistance.

Usage
Insulin is produced by beta cells of the pancreas. It leads to Type 1 (IDDM) diabetes caused by Insulin deficiency & Type 2 (NIDDM) diabetes caused by insulin resistance. This assay is useful in the management of Diabetes. It is also used for diagnosing Insulinoma when used in conjunction with Proinsulin and C-peptide measurement.
