Blood glucose/sugar is your body’s primary energy source. It is derived from the food you eat and transported by blood to all cells for utilization in their varied tasks. If your blood sugar levels rise, you have diabetes, which can be Type 1, Type 2, or Prediabetes. A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher than 200 mg/dL after two hours of eating or drinking glucose is classified as diabetes. If your results fall between 100 and 125 mg/dL, you are called prediabetic. If you are over 35 years old, have a BMI greater than 25, are pregnant, or have prediabetes, you must test your blood glucose levels on a regular basis. This test is useful for monitoring the effects of diabetes medications; identifying high or low blood sugar levels; tracking your progress toward your overall treatment goals; learning how diet and exercise affect blood sugar levels; and understanding how other factors, such as illness or stress, affect blood sugar levels. This test measures blood glucose after administering 75 g of glucose drink to the patient. Your doctor chooses the time for the sample to be taken.
