Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is made in small amounts during metabolism in your body specially when you digest proteins. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in metabolism, a process which converts food into energy. If you suffer from Vitamin B12 deficiency due to poor digestion, malabsorption or poor diet, extra amount of MMA is produced. High MMA levels indicate Vitamin B12 deficiency. Less commonly, high MMA levels can be due to congenital causes. This test only indicates presence or absence of MMA in urine.
