Overview
What is ISLET CELL ANTIBODY
Your body’s pancreas contains a range of cells known as islet cells, which emit particular hormones. Insulin is released by the beta subtype of cells, lowering blood sugar and glucose levels. When antibodies against islet cells develop, your own pancreatic cells are destroyed, leading to autoimmune issues and Type 1 diabetes. A risk factor for Type 1 diabetes is the presence of islet cell antibodies in the blood. This test aids in distinguishing between diabetes type 1 and type 2.

Usage
Islet cell Antibody measurement is a sensitive means to assess risk and predict onset of Type 1 Diabetes. There is a direct correlation between the antibody titre and severity of autoimmune process.
