Overview
What is C-PEPTIDE STIMULATION BY GLUCAGON
Assessing C-peptide levels in blood is a reliable method of determining insulin production. The pancreas secretes insulin, which enters the bloodstream and facilitates the uptake of sugar by cells for energy production. Insulin thus controls blood sugar levels. The C-peptide test aids in managing diabetes therapy, determining the kind of diabetes you have, and determining the reason behind low blood sugar levels. Your C-peptide levels rising after taking glucagon is a sign that the pancreatic beta cell area, which secretes insulin, is working properly.

Specimen
2 mL (0.5 mL min.) Serum from 1 SST for each timed specimen. Draw baseline fasting specimen. Administer 1 mg Glucagon I.V. Draw additional specimens at 5, 10 and 15 minutes post-Glucagon. Note time drawn on each container label and test request form. 12 hours overnight fasting mandatory. Ship refrigerated or frozen.
Usage
C-Peptide stimulation by glucagon is useful in assessing patients for pancreatic beta cell function and reserve. Stimulated C-peptide values in patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus are associated with microvascular complications.
